The problem
The beekeeping landscape is scattered. Laws differ in every state, startup costs and honey prices are hard to pin down, mite-treatment thresholds are buried in PDFs, and there's no single free place that helps someone decide whether they're even ready to start. Aspiring and small-scale beekeepers stitch it together from forums, extension docs, and guesswork. We built BuzzWise to consolidate that into one fast, free resource — and to run our own growth-engineering and applied-AI playbook on a product we own outright.
What we built
- Five decision calculators grounded in cited public data — startup cost and ROI, honey pricing (USDA National Honey Report), honey yield, sugar-syrup feeding, and a varroa-mite tester that returns a seasonal treat/monitor verdict against Honey Bee Health Coalition thresholds
- A 10-question readiness quiz that scores whether someone is ready to keep bees and returns personalized, weak-area-specific guidance
- Programmatic guides covering all 50 US states — beekeeping laws, a regional season calendar, and a local-honey directory — plus a blog and an auto-updating news feed
- QueenGuard, a free browser-based hive-management app where each logged inspection is analyzed by an LLM for queen and colony risk, with health scoring, smart reminders, and PDF/CSV export
- Over 180 statically pre-rendered pages with per-page structured data, sitemap, and RSS, so the whole surface stays fast and fully indexable
Approach and role
Because BuzzWise is our own product, it doubles as our proving ground: we design and build the whole thing end to end — data model, calculators, content system, and interface — and push technical SEO, programmatic content, interactive tooling, and applied AI without a client's constraints. We chose a fast modern stack and pre-render every route to static HTML at build time, so a large, search-optimized surface stays quick and crawlable. AI shows up only where it earns its place: inside QueenGuard, an LLM turns a raw inspection log into a read on hive health — not a bolt-on chatbot.
Outcome
BuzzWise is how we demonstrate growth-engineering, technical SEO, and applied AI on a product we own outright — a genuinely useful free toolkit for beekeepers, backed by 180+ pre-rendered pages, real calculators grounded in public data, and an AI-assisted hive app, all shipped and maintained by a small team.
